Top 5 Things You Should Service On Your Car Every Spring

When winter bids goodbye and you feel the touch of spring, you may want to celebrate the sunshine and the warmth with road trips, family outing, and adventure camping. With your car being exposed to harsh weather conditions during the icy months, there are chances that it will not perform as safely and as efficiently as you expect it to be. This means that you have to make sure your car is ready for spring before you hit the trails. While there may be a number of maintenance or repair works that you may want to implement on your car as part of its spring makeover, here are the top 5 things that you should necessarily service to eliminate winter’s impacts from your car and make it spring-ready:

1. Battery: Cold climates take a toll on the health of vehicle batteries and so you may want to get your charging system tested. Check the connections. Get them cleaned and make sure that they are tight. Check for signs of corrosion. If you detect a hard, white scum, use water, baking soda, and a toothbrush to remove the coating. You may consider investing in a new battery if your existing battery has been into use for over five years.

2. Tires: Air pressure changes with temperatures and this, in turn, impacts tire pressure. Given the fact that your tires are always losing air at any given point of time, it is a good idea to get your tires checked every month. Additionally, if you are not using all-weather tires, you may want to switch to the option that best suits spring conditions. Inspect the tread carefully in order to detect signs of wear-and-tear. Ideally, the tread should be wearing out uniformly and should have adequate strength to survive the warm, rainy season that is approaching. Make sure you spend adequate time on visual inspections.

3. HVAC System: Your car’s HVAC system remains inactive throughout the winter months and that is why it may take some time before you can manage to bring it back to a functional mode. When you turn it on after a long gap, allow some time, say 15-20 minutes, so that you can eliminate strange odors that the system may generate initially. If you are still not able to get rid of the odor or if you feel that something is wrong, you may hire the services of a professional to get your car’s air-conditioning system inspected.

4. Underbody: Your car’s underbody is most likely to be exposed to dirt, sand, and salt throughout the winter months and this may lead to corrosion and rusting. You may want to wash your car’s bottom yourself or you may pay for professional power wash at your local car service center. Consider cleaning the engine with a soft cloth and soapy water.

5. Coolant System: Your car’s coolant system works less during winter months compared to what it does during the warmer months. While the car’s engine remains hotter than the external atmosphere at all times irrespective of the temperature fluctuations, still a rise in temperature by a few additional degrees may lead to an issue. As spring comes and the temperature begins to soar high, you may want to make sure that your car’s coolant system is in a healthy form.

Take some time to inspect the wiper blades. Ice-buildup is a leading cause of damage of the wiper blades. Check for signs of cracking. The wiper blades should be strong enough to survive the spring showers.

At the end of the day, maintenance is not a one-day job. Passionate car guys make maintenance a part of their daily schedule. And this is what simplifies their seasonal maintenance regime.
